How to Choose the Right Facial Cleanser for Your Skin Type

Stay Clear Beauty Flawless Start Gel Cleanser — man holding sulfate-free gel cleanser, gentle deep cleanse for acne-prone, oily, and sensitive skin. How to use.

Of all the decisions you make in a skincare routine, your cleanser might be the most important one you're giving the least thought to.

Most people grab whatever's on sale, use body soap, or stick with something they've used for years without ever questioning it. And then they wonder why their skin is tight, reactive, or perpetually breaking out. The cleanser is step one — it sets the condition of your skin for everything that comes after it. Get it wrong and nothing else in your routine works the way it should.

Here's what you actually need to know.

What a Cleanser Is Actually Doing

A facial cleanser removes what has accumulated on your skin — dead skin cells, excess oil, environmental debris, sunscreen, and makeup. Done correctly, it leaves your skin clean without stripping the lipid barrier that holds moisture in and keeps irritants out.

That last part is where most cleansers fail. Harsh formulas, sulfates, and high-pH soaps remove everything — including the protective barrier your skin needs to function. The result is skin that feels squeaky clean for several minutes and then gets tight, flaky, or can start overproducing oil to compensate. A good cleanser cleans without disrupting. That's the entire job.

The Main Types of Cleansers — And Who They're For

Creamy Cleansers — For Acne, Rosacea, Dry, Sensitive, Combination and Mature Skin and Especially Great in Dry Climates

Richer and more nourishing than gels, cream cleansers contain moisturizing agents that leave a light protective layer on the skin after rinsing. If your skin is dry, reactive, barrier-compromised, or mature, a cream cleanser gives you a thorough clean without pulling moisture out.

  • Removes dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping what your skin needs to stay balanced
  • Supports your barrier instead of breaking it down
  • Leaves skin soft and hydrated — not tight, and not greasy!
  • Can be used wet or dry depending on your preference and what you're removing. You've heard me talk about dry cleansing - wonderful during travel, camping or if you are experiencing excessive dryness.

The Victory Cream Cleanser is the correction to cleansers that strip. Chamomile and arnica calm redness on contact. Cranberry and blueberry extracts deliver antioxidants. Sodium PCA and sodium hyaluronate bind water to the skin so it stays soft long after you rinse. It works with or without water, it's TSA carry-on compliant, and it has a light natural cucumber scent from plant-derived extracts — no synthetic fragrance. Ever.

Gel Cleansers — For Oily and Acne-Prone Skin

Water-based, lightweight, typically sulfate-free. Gel cleansers cut through excess sebum and lift impurities without adding oil back to the skin. If your skin runs oily, breaks out regularly, or feels congested, this is your formula.

Clean skin shouldn't come at the cost of healthy skin.

  • Cleans deeply without stripping or disrupting your barrier
  • Rinses completely clean with zero residue
  • Works with hydrating actives like sodium hyaluronate to keep skin balanced, not depleted
  • Ideal for double cleansing when using our Flawless Start Gel Cleanser, as step one, before your creamy cleanser, it removes SPF and makeup. Most clients, however, do not need to double cleanse when using the Victory Cream Cleanser, only days with heavy sunscreen or makeup.

The Flawless Start Gel Cleanser was built for exactly this. Sulfate-free, low-suds, and formulated with chamomile and arnica to calm irritation while it cleans. Aloe vera and sodium PCA replenish moisture during the cleanse so your skin finishes the step hydrated — not tight. From the first use, skin feels clean without that stripped sensation. Within the first week, redness and irritation start to settle.

Foam Cleansers — For Oily and Combination Skin

Designed for a deep clean, foaming cleansers work best on skin that produces a lot of oil. The foam lifts debris efficiently, but formula quality matters — some foaming cleansers contain harsher surfactants that strip the barrier. If your skin feels tight after a foaming cleanser, that formula isn't for you. I recommend our very low suds Flawless Start Gel Cleanser, which will not make your skin feel tight after.

Oil Cleansers — For Heavy SPF, Makeup, and Double Cleansing

Oil dissolves oil. An oil cleanser applied to dry skin breaks down sunscreen, makeup, and sebum in a way that water-based formulas simply can't match. They leave a light layer of moisture behind, which makes them excellent for dry and combination skin — and a surprisingly effective first step for oily skin that also struggles with dehydration.

  • Always step one in a double cleanse.
  • Add Stay Clear Oil to Your Cleanser this is my best advise, don't buy an oil cleanser, add oil to your cleanser when you need it, and none when you don't.
  • Follow with a water-based cleanser to remove residual oil before applying actives

How to Actually Cleanse

Application matters more than most people think. Do not first dampen your face and neck, dampen only hands with lukewarm water before application of cleanser — not hot, which disrupts the barrier (when rinsing). Work a small amount, a full pump when using Stay Clear, into your skin with your fingertips in gentle, circular motions. You don't need to scrub. Pressure and friction cause irritation, not cleanliness. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft, clean towel. The whole process should take about 60 seconds.

How Often

Every night, without exception. Sleeping in SPF, makeup, and the day's environmental debris is one of the most reliable ways to keep your skin broken out and accelerate aging.

In the morning, it depends on your skin. Oily and acne-prone skin benefits from a morning cleanse. Or you may want to cleanse if wearing makeup in the morning. Dry and sensitive skin often does better with no cleanse in the morning — over-cleansing compounds barrier damage over time. If you exercise, cleanse after sweating. Sweat left on acne-prone skin feeds bacteria.

Which One Is Right for You

  • Oily or acne-prone: Gel cleanser, sulfate-free, oil-free. → Flawless Start Gel Cleanser
  • Dry, sensitive, or mature: Cream cleanser, barrier-supportive. → Victory Cream Cleanser
  • Combination: Gel in the morning, cream at night — or a gentle formula that works for both zones.
  • Reactive or compromised barrier: Fragrance-free, minimal ingredients, non-stripping. Both of ours qualify.
  • Wearing heavy SPF or makeup daily: Add our oil to your cleanser to assist in removal.

The Cleanser Is the Foundation

If your cleanser is stripping your skin, nothing that comes after it — no serum, no treatment, no moisturizer — can fully compensate. Skin that's tight and irritated after cleansing absorbs actives less effectively and reacts more.

Get the cleanser right and the rest of your routine actually has a chance to work.
